People fleeing war are exposed to highly stressful situations so humane and supportive assistance are of upmost importance. Apart from basic needs such as food and accommodation, many of the people fleeing war also need psychosocial interventions.
As resulted from the third needs and intentions assessment report prepared by IOM Slovakia based on the analysis of 780 face-to-face surveys with Ukrainian refugees and third-country nationals fleeing Ukraine, psychological counselling along with employment and support for returning remain the most significant unmet needs of people interviewed.
During the assistance to and consultations with war-affected people on what they witnessed, about their experience and fears, IOM always strives to create a secure environment and approach people in a very sensitive way without increasing their vulnerabilities.
So far, IOM provided psychological first aid to 16 adults and 9 children and additional individual psychological counselling to 40 adults and 9 children. Crisis-affected people have also been assisted by consulting in group sessions. Eight adults and 8 children participated using this format of support.
