Miroslava Pinková from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Zuzana Vatráľová from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) discussed the life in a refugee camp and especially the assistance to refugees through their resettlement to safe countries.
The One World Film Festival in cooperation with the IOM screened the documentary One Way Ticket about a huge life change of refugees who were resettled from a refugee camp to the US. The online screening that took place on 11 November 2020 was watched by 203 spectators.
IOM Director General António Vitorino:
"Last year, on International Migrants Day, we highlighted the importance of social cohesion and recognized the generosity of societies supporting migrants in their communities, unaware of what 2020 would bring."
Since 2006, more than a million visitors have searched for important information on various areas of life and stay of foreigners in Slovakia on the website of the IOM Migration Information Centre (MIC): www.mic.iom.sk.
In 2019, the IOM Migration Information Centre provided 6,198 clients with 10,398 consultations about important areas of life in Slovakia. Another 108 foreigners benefited from the IOM assistance with their voluntary return to 24 countries of origin. IOM lecturers trained another 87 professionals in the field of human trafficking prevention.
In 2018 and 2019, the IOM Migration Information Centre organized a series of discussion evenings We Are Also at Home Here in Trnava, Žilina, Prešov and Martin. The series culminated on 11 December 2019 at Lumière Cinema in Bratislava with the screening of the film Stranger in Paradise.
Unsuccessful asylum seekers and migrants without a residence permit in Slovakia, who cannot stay in the Slovak Republic, do not have financial means and wish to return to their country of origin, will find information on assistance on the new IOM Slovakia website www.avr.iom.sk.
The tenth edition in the IOM report series presents key information and latest statistics on migration across the world as well as thematic chapters on current issues of migration until 2020. The next part analyzes migration’s complexities and emerging migration issues.
The annual report informs about the most significant activities, changes and developments in the field of migration and international protection in Slovakia in 2019. The report includes also migration statistics for Slovakia for 2019 and those which are not collected at EU level.
