IOM through its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) regularly and systematically captures, processes and disseminates information to provide a better understanding of the movements and evolving needs of displaced populations, whether on site or en route.

Since April 2022, DTM has been regularly surveying people who are residing in the eleven countries included in the Regional Refugee Response Plan for Ukraine.

In Slovakia, IOM’s DTM team has been conducting various surveys with Ukrainian refugees and third-country nationals across border crossing points and key sites in the country.

In the first months following the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, IOM’s DTM team was conducting face-to-face surveys on Needs and Intentions to better understand mobility dynamics and rapidly assess the immediate needs of war-affected populations.

Since 2023, surveys with those Ukrainian refugees staying in Slovakia are conducted to understand more about the living situations of these persons in Slovakia, including the integration and inclusion aspects and challenges faced by the affected populations.

IOM has been continuously collecting data in order to assess needs and intentions of people returning to Ukraine and to understand reasons and trends of movements across the border back to Ukraine.

IOM also analysis displaced third-country nationals (TCNs) arriving to and departing from Slovakia and other available data on the cross-border movements in relation to the conflict in Ukraine, including the data on international protection requests in Slovakia.

In addition, since 2022, IOM in Slovakia has been cooperating with UNHCR in Slovakia on an assessment of collective accommodation sites in the country providing shelter for refugees from Ukraine through the Site Mapping and Monitoring (SMM) tool. SMM is a joint initiative of IOM and UNHCR which aims to ensure an adequate and timely understanding of the situation and needs of the accommodation sites in Slovakia.

IOM team is also a part of an inter-agency team efforts in the Socio-Economic Insight Survey (former Multi-Sectoral Needs Assessment), a product developed by UNHCR and deployed in all the countries included in the Regional Refugee Response Plan for Ukraine.

Multi-Sectoral Needs Assessment conducted in July - August 2023, led by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and implemented by International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO); covering 819 households across the country.

The Socio-Economic Insights Survey (SEIS, previously known as the Multi-sector Needs Assessment, MSNA, conducted in 2022 and 2023), was conducted in Slovakia between May and July 2024, to guide the humanitarian response, allowing for targeting and prioritization of interventions amid the emergency situation, and with the aim to inform the planning of the 2025 response, thus corresponding better to the needs of refugees.
