IOM Slovakia has published the 5th edition of the Training Manual for the Prevention of Human Trafficking, providing up-to-date information on human trafficking and serving as a practical tool for preparing educational activities. Its goal is to raise awareness of the risks associated with human trafficking and contribute to its prevention.

The publication offers an overview of human trafficking mechanisms, its process, and so-called "red flags"—warning signs that may indicate danger. The manual provides practical advice on how to safely prepare for work abroad, recognize suspicious job offers, and use the interactive SAFE app. Through the simulation of three real-life scenarios, the app highlights key risks to watch out for and provides useful contacts—not only in case of doubts but also in emergency situations.

The manual also addresses the topic of responsible shopping, as the fashion industry is one of the sectors with a high prevalence of exploitation.

The publication includes expert-verified prevention activities designed for group education. These activities can be used in various educational programs—whether in working with children and youth or in training professionals from different institutions. They primarily support the development of social skills and critical thinking, help identify suspicious offers, and provide guidance on how to act in situations that could lead to human trafficking.

Human trafficking is among the most profitable illegal activities in the world, ranking just behind drug and arms trafficking. Contrary to common belief, it often does not start with a violent abduction but rather with a seemingly harmless, attractive job offer. In half of the cases, the offer comes from someone the victim knows, highlighting the importance of awareness and prevention.

The reality of forced labor, exploitation, and the abuse of vulnerability can affect anyone. Young people looking for temporary jobs or work abroad are particularly at risk.

This is why prevention remains the most important tool in the fight against human trafficking.

The manual was updated by IOM Slovakia with financial support from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden.
