On Sunday 8 May, First Lady of the United States Jill Biden visited Eastern Slovakia. At the beginning, she went to the Košice Hotspot where on a daily basis the IOM staff provide information and counselling for people from Ukraine who search for a safe refuge in Slovakia.

8.02 million internally displaced persons in Ukraine; 5.98 million refugees have fled Ukraine; 245,029 third country nationals have arrived in Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, and Moldova; 437,000 reached by IOM’s response in Ukraine since 24 February.

IOM delivered blankets for an immediate distribution for people fleeing war temporary accommodated in Kosice, ensured health safety of refugees, helped mothers and their babies on their move to Slovakia and provided the City of Košice with the rental of the bus transfer for people in need. This IOM assistance was made possible by financial support from the Japanese Government.

In April and first days of May 2022, IOM Migration Information Centre (MIC) opened free Slovak language courses for 5 classes of Ukrainian citizens in in-person format in Bratislava and Gabčíkovo Accommodation Facility and for 15 classes in online format.

IOM just released its 2nd rapid needs assessment report that presents analysis of 481 interviews conducted face-to-face with Ukrainian refugees and Third Country Nationals fleeing war in Ukraine. The responses to the survey on displacement patterns, needs and intention were collected between 9 March and 21 April 2022.

IOM released a displacement analysis of third-country nationals (TCNs) arriving from Ukraine to Slovakia and those who exiting the country towards Ukraine. A pilot report published in Slovakia for the period of 24 February – 25 April 2022 highlighted that more than 60 percent of the entries of TCNs from Ukraine to Slovakia occurred before 10 March, with a peak of entries (8,391) between 27 February and 2 March 2022.
