The Slovak Republic has taken a key step toward strengthening its migration governance. With support from the European Commission (EC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) the Migration Office of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic (Migration Office) has launched the project “Technical Support for the Development of the Action Plan for the National Strategy of the Slovak Republic for the Management of Asylum and Migration.” The initiative is funded by the European Union through the Technical Support Instrument (TSI).

Objectives and Key Outputs

Running from May 2025 to July 2026, the project will deliver a comprehensive Action Plan translating the National Strategy of the Slovak Republic for the Management of Asylum and Migration’s (National Migration Strategy) objectives into concrete, measurable steps. The Action Plan will serve as a practical tool to implement government priorities, promote institutional coordination, align national policy with the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, and improve communication of migration issues across stakeholders.

Alongside the Action Plan, the project will strengthen the capacity of Slovak institutions through a training package on communication of migration topics and a capacity-building roadmap, ensuring sustainability beyond the project’s duration.

This EU-supported initiative marks a significant step in reinforcing Slovakia’s migration governance and establishing a balanced system that integrates security, economic, and humanitarian dimensions.

Developing the Action Plan

Prepared in line with Government Resolution No. 300/2025, the Action Plan will be developed through a structured and participatory process, including a series of thematic roundtables, as well as bilateral and multilateral meetings. These platforms will facilitate inclusive dialogue among ministries, public institutions, NGOs, academia, local governments, and migrant communities, ensuring coordinated and well-informed decision-making. Expert guidance and draft thematic inputs will be provided by IOM and the EC. To ensure accountability, sustainability, and effective implementation, indicators for measuring progress will be proposed to monitor the execution of the Action Plan and assess the achievement of its strategic objectives and long-term outcomes.

The Government has mandated that the Action Plan be submitted by June 2026.

A Collaborative Process

The project is overseen by a Project Steering Committee (PSC), bringing together representatives of the Migration Office, IOM, the European Commission’s Reform and Investment Task Force (SG REFORM), and Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME). This structure ensures strong governance, accountability, and alignment with both national and EU priorities.

Looking Ahead

The National Migration Strategy marks an important political milestone for Slovakia. The new Action Plan, supported by the EU and developed with broad participation, will ensure that the Strategy is not just a policy vision, but a practical framework for effective migration management.

Through this initiative, Slovakia reinforces its commitment to coordinated, transparent, and sustainable migration governance – benefitting both society and the individuals seeking protection or opportunities within the country.
