Fifteen Slovak and foreign experts together with 37 employees of the state and public administration, non-governmental organizations and academic employees from Slovakia participated in the summer educational seminar entitled Migration globally and locally, which was organized from 20 to 23 August 2012 in Bratislava by the National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN) in the Slovak Republic.

On August 2, 2012 fifteen clients coming from Columbia, Nicaragua, Syria Egypt, United States and other countries used the opportunity to obtain complex counselling from representatives of several institutions. Pilot day of specialized counselling called ´One Stop Shop´ organized by the IOM Migration Information Centre (MIC) in Bratislava met with a positive response.

The third issue of the newsletter contains a brief overview of selected activities and events of IOM Bratislava in the field of migrant integration, counter trafficking, humanitarian transfers of refugees, and other main operations conducted from April to June 2012. At the same time, the newsletter brings a summary of achievements in 2011 in the field of assisted voluntary returns and preventing human trafficking and help to human trafficking victims.

In this issue of the IOM Bratislava newsletter we look back at 2011 and provide an overview of results and achievements within several of our main activity fields. At the same time, the newsletter brings information on events and activities implemented between January and March 2012 and summary of interesting projects currently being carried out.

IOM International Organization for Migration carried out an event entitled “MultiCOOLtural evening We are at home here”. It was held on 19 April 2012 in the Cultural Center Dunaj in Bratislava. The evening was the opening event of the 7th [Fjúžn] festival, organized by the Milan Šimečka Foundation. The multicultural party with rhythm, dances, and flavours of Asia, Africa, Orient and Caribbean introduced a fusion of different cultures – both Slovak and foreign ones – and attracted over 500 guests!

In the final months of 2011 a number of IOM projects culminated in various closing events, such as conferences, expert seminars or publication of reports. In this issue of the IOM newsletter, you will find information about these events and other activities implemented in the period from October to December 2011.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Milan Šimečka Foundation in cooperation with The MediaWise Trust from the UK held workshops Migrants in the Spotlight in Bratislava on migration and media for journalists on 17 October 2011 and for students of journalism and mass media on 18 October 2011.

Slovensko dvojnásobne uspelo v medzinárodnej mediálnej súťaži Migrants in the Spotlight o najlepší článok alebo dokumentárny film na tému migrácie a integrácie. Do súťaže sa mohli zapojiť študenti vysokých škôl v krajinách Európskej únie vo veku od 18 do 28 rokov.

Ženeva, 18. decembra 2010 – Je potrebné, aby si vlády uvedomili prospešnosť migrácie a šírili tento pohľad vo vzťahu k širokej verejnosti, hovorí Medzinárodná organizácia pre migráciu (IOM) pri príležitosti Medzinárodného dňa migrantov. Pozitívny prínos migrantov pre spoločnosť je v dnešnej dobe často spochybňovaný, keďže mnohé vlády prijímajú krátkozraké opatrenia, predstavujúc túto skupinu populácie ako záťaž pre zotavujúce sa ekonomiky alebo systémy sociálneho zabezpečenia.

Publikácia „Postoje verejnosti k cudzincom a zahraničnej migrácii v SR“ ponúka široký pohľad na rôzne aspekty zahraničnej migrácie na Slovensku a v mnohých smeroch ponúka nové informácie o téme, ktorá sa na Slovensku po roku 1989 neskúmala intenzívne a do hĺbky. Z tohto dôvodu sa IOM podujala spracovať správu skúmajúcu postoje slovenskej verejnosti k cudzincom a zahraničnej migrácii.
