In 2012, 180 refugees from refugee camps in Egypt, Eritrea, Iran and Yemen were received in the Emergency Transit Center (ETC) in Humenné. During the year 2012, 166 refugees were resettled from the Centre to a third country - 80 % of them to the USA, whilst the rest found their new homes in Canada.

While Somalis constituted a half of those received in 2012, a quarter of refugees were of Afghan origin, followed by Eritrean, Ethiopian, Iraqi and Sudanese nationality. The refugees were accommodated in the Centre for a period of 6 months during which they completed their preparations for a new life in some of the receiving countries.

The humanitarian transfer of refugees through the Slovak Republic is carried out based on a trilateral treaty between the Government of the Slovak Republic, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The transportation of these refugees to the Slovak Republic and then to their country of resettlement is organized by the IOM. Furthermore, IOM also provides the refugees with services related to medical examinations and cultural orientation, and/or language classes.

The activities of IOM in this project are financed by the US Government through its USRAP Program – United States Refugee Admissions Program or by similar programs of other resettlement countries.
